Cordyceps militaris is the cultivated relative of Cordyceps sinensis (read more about it here). Its main advantage is that it can be easily farmed (unlike sinensis), which improves availability and reduces cost. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted on this mushroom, and the part used is mainly the fruiting body. In traditional medicine, it has been used to support immune function, respiratory health, inflammation, and to enhance energy levels. A comparison between the two Cordyceps species can be found here.

Key Active Compounds:

Cordyceps militaris contains several active compounds, some of which are also found in Cordyceps sinensis:

  • Cordycepin; a unique nucleoside associated with anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting, and anti-cancer effects.

  • Polysaccharides, including beta-glucans; these compounds support immune function, reduce chronic inflammation, counter oxidative stress, and positively influence the gut microbiome.

  • Ergosterol and Ergosterolic acid; may contribute to anti-inflammatory activity and cellular support.

  • Adenosine; affects cellular metabolism.

Evidence-Based Medical Properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory and immune support: Cordycepin and C. militaris extracts have been shown to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and to modulate immune activity in a beneficial way.

  • Fatigue and athletic performance: Human studies have shown improved endurance during intensive exercise after three weeks of Cordyceps supplementation.

  • Anti-cancer potential: Cordycepin and other compounds from C. militaris demonstrated inhibition of malignant cell growth in in-vitro and preclinical studies.

  • Respiratory health: C. militaris supplementation may reduce inflammatory processes in lung conditions, improve respiratory function in asthma, and prevent the accumulation of inflammatory cells in the airways.

Summary:

Similar to its prestigious relative, Cordyceps militaris supports:

Respiratory health

Increased energy levels and physical endurance

Antioxidant activity

Anti-inflammatory effects

Immune support

Anti-cancer potential

Side Effects and Warnings:

Cordyceps militaris may enhance immune activity, so caution is advised when taking immunosuppressive medications or in autoimmune conditions.
