Agaricus Blazei

Updated: Dec 29, 2025

Agaricus blazei is a popular wild mushroom from Brazil. The fruiting bodies belong to the fleshy mushroom family, some of which are edible and medicinal. The Champignon mushroom is the most well-known Agaricus mushroom. Agaricus originates from the Brazilian rainforest, where local tribes used it for food and medicine. Traditionally, it was used as a medicinal mushroom to strengthen the body in chronic and seasonal illnesses. The mushroom was later introduced to Japan, where it became popular as a complementary therapy for cancer and other conditions.

Key Active Compounds:

  • Beta-glucans and other polysaccharides: Support the immune system, have anti-cancer properties, and aid gut health.

  • Sterols, isoflavonoids, phenols, vitamins: Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, liver-protective, support metabolic syndrome.

  • Agaritine: Can be potentially hepatotoxic and carcinogenic, but it breaks down easily with heat or drying and is absent from dietary supplements and extracts. This is why consuming large amounts of raw mushrooms is not recommended.

Evidence-Based Medical Properties:

  • Immune system: Agaricus has been shown to support immunity, reduce allergic responses, exert anti-inflammatory effects, and support mucosal immunity (gut and lungs).

  • Cancer: It inhibits tumor growth and is one of the most studied mushrooms for cancer in Japan, showing activity against multiple cancer types.

  • Metabolic syndrome: Reduces insulin resistance, acts as an antioxidant, improves blood lipid profiles, and protects the liver.

  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Clinical studies show improvements in symptoms, quality of life, and fatigue in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
